1st International Festival Cosmopolis took place in 2000 in the Peninsula of Panagia, Kavala. It was supervised by the Municipal Development and Tourism Enterprise of Kavala.

Its aim was to promote the culture of Mediterranean countries and The Balkans. The five countries that were invited to participate to that intercultural event were Egypt, Spain, Romania, Turkey, and Greece, (represented by Crete).

There was a variety of cultural events, like concerts in the castle of Panagia, dance groups in the small theater of Mohamed Ali, outdoor restaurant with ethnic tastes in the lighthouse of Panagia, pavilions that presented part of the culture of their countries, laying across the narrow streets of Panagia. Within the framework of Cosmopolis Festival, the Symposium of Mediterranean poetry took place in Imaret.

The music groups that participated were:
Contrabanto (Greece)
Trihordo (Greece)
Vasiliki Papageorgiou – Gundogarken (Greece Turkey)
Fanfare Ciocarlia (Romania)

The dance groups that participated were:
Bastonerde Cantonigros (Spain)
Group of Folk Dances of Egypt (Egypt)
Brave Crete (Crete)
Gehem (Turkey)
Romanasul (Romania)

As for the traditional dishes, visitors had the chance to experience traditional tastes of the participating countries:
Paella from Spain
Shish Tawouk and Farafel from Egypt
Boiled Goat with rise and pies from Crete
Imam Bayldi and Guvec from Turkey
